How to Turn Your 529 Plan Into a Global Volunteering Experience

What if your college savings plan could do more than just pay for your classes on campus? With the right structure, your 529 plan can help fund a volunteer program, giving you real-world experience, academic credit, and a life-changing adventure at the same time.

529 plans are designed to cover qualified higher education expenses. By completing a volunteer program through IVHQ, while enrolling as a non-degree seeking student and earning academic credit through Warren Wilson College, your program becomes an eligible educational expense. This makes IVHQ one of the most affordable ways to use your 529 plan to study abroad and gain volunteer experience.

How it Works in 5 Simple Steps

1: Apply for an IVHQ Program 🌎

Choose your preferred destination or start by exploring Volunteer Abroad Projects. Be sure to indicate that you plan to use 529 plan funding for your international volunteer experience so our team can guide you accordingly. This step ensures your program is properly structured, in order to qualify.

2: Select Your Academic Coursework 📜

Students can earn up to 16 US academic credits alongside their volunteer experience. IVHQ offers a variety of online courses on a wide range of topics. The coursework can be completed before, during, or after your volunteering, giving you complete flexibility to achieve your goals, without the pressure of immediate deadlines. The cost to earn academic credit ranges from $599 - $1999 USD.

3: Enroll with Warren Wilson College 🎓

To use your 529 plan, you also need to enroll as a non-degree seeking student with Warren Wilson College in order for your funding to be accepted by an academic institution. The enrollment fee is $1650 USD, and this is what makes your international volunteer experience eligible for 529 plan use.

4: Use Your 529 Plan to Pay for Qualified Volunteer Expenses ✈️

After working through your budget, you will submit a request with your 529 service provider for funds to be sent to Warren Wilson College. Your funds can then be transferred directly to IVHQ so you don’t need to pay out of pocket for the program costs. Here is what your 529 funds can pay for:

  • Warren Wilson College enrollment fee
  • Academic credit costs
  • IVHQ Program fees (including your housing and other inclusions)
  • Travel insurance
  • Optional program add-ons
  • Potentially flights and travel costs (this varies by your 529 service provider)

5: Complete Your Program and Earn Academic Credit 👩‍💻

After completing your volunteer experience and coursework, you will receive a transcript from Warren Wilson College. By using your 529 plan on an IVHQ program, you will unlock valuable:

  • International experience
  • Academic credit
  • Career readiness skills
  • Resume building experience
  • Global perspective

A Parent’s Perspective: “It was a no brainer.” 🏆

Allyson Kelley saw firsthand how powerful this opportunity can be:

“In the summer before his senior year, my son went to Costa Rica for a month. It was evident that the experience changed him for the better…he had some money in a 529 college savings account, so when we found out that we could use that account to fund his trip and he could get some college credit in the process, it was a no brainer.”

Her son didn’t just travel. He grew personally, gained direction, and earned credit toward his future.
